Brewing Competitions: The Sport of Brewing

Brewing Glory: A Look Into the World of Beer Competitions

At first glance, beer competitions might not seem all that different from your favorite sports tournaments. There are brackets, big wins, underdogs, and years of preparation behind every performance. But instead of slam dunks or home runs, victory is measured in aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, and craftsmanship. And just like in sports, those golden awards are a symbol of dedication, discipline, and heart.

A Pint-Sized History of Beer Competitions

Beer competitions have been around in some form for centuries, from medieval brewing guilds showcasing their best batches to local fairs awarding ribbons to standout homebrews. But in the modern craft beer era, the structure and prestige of these events have taken on a life of their own. As craft brewing grew throughout the late 20th century, so did the need for standards, community, and recognition. Enter formal competitions.

By the 1980s, craft brewing was blossoming in the U.S., and with it came a desire to celebrate quality and innovation. The Great American Beer Festival (GABF) was born in 1982, founded by beer writer Charlie Papazian. What started with just 22 breweries and 40 beers has grown into one of the world’s largest and most respected beer competitions. Each year, brewers from across the country submit entries in over 100 categories, hoping to snag one of the coveted gold, silver, or bronze medals — the craft beer world’s version of a championship ring.

The World Beer Cup: The Olympics™ of Brewing

If the GABF is like the Super Bowl of American brewing, the World Beer Cup is its international counterpart, the Olympics of beer. Now held annually by the Brewers Association, it invites entries from breweries around the globe. First established in 1996, the World Beer Cup is now one of the most prestigious competitions in the brewing world, judged by an elite panel of experts from over 30 countries. Winning a medal here doesn’t just mean you’ve brewed something delicious, it means your beer stands among the best on the planet.

We’re proud to say that our North Tower Stout has earned another gold medal at the 2025 World Beer Cup –  bringing home not only an award but also a recognition of the passion and precision our brewing team pours into every pint.

The Unsung Heroes: Home Brewing Competitions

Not all competitions take place on a global stage. Many brewers, including some on our own team, got their start in home brewing competitions. These grassroots contests, often hosted by local clubs or regional festivals, are where creativity runs wild and future professionals cut their teeth.

Judging is just as rigorous, with certified judges evaluating entries based on the same principles used in major competitions. Home brewing contests provide invaluable feedback and the thrill of recognition and they remind us all that great beer can come from any garage, kitchen, or backyard setup with enough passion behind it.

Beer and Sports: More Alike Than You Think

So, how are beer competitions like sports? Both demand skill, strategy, and practice. Both bring people together in celebration. And both can ignite the same thrill of competition and the pride of victory. There’s anticipation in waiting for the results, camaraderie in shared passion, and unforgettable moments when hard work pays off.

Whether it’s a hometown brewery bringing home a World Beer Cup medal or a local brewer earning their first ribbon at a homebrew fest, these competitions help raise the bar for the entire beer community. They celebrate not just who’s best, but what’s possible when creativity and craft come together.

So the next time you raise a glass of your favorite award-winning beer, know that you’re sipping something that’s been through the gauntlet, and come out golden.
