Boss Mama | Sunday Strum Day
Mahtowa-based singer/guitarist Colleen Myhre put out a note to the world in 2019 with the release of the album Boss Mama. In the lower right corner of the album cover are the words “just getting started.” Though she’d been performing for more than 20 years, she was indeed just getting started. Collaborations with a slew of the region’s musicians led to the gradual and seemingly ongoing formation of Boss Mama and the Jebberhooch, a band that pushes Myhre’s country soul to new levels with deep grooves and a visible sense of joy.

Ian Alexy | Weekend Primer
Rock-and-roll vagabond Ian Alexy moved to Duluth 20 years ago and launched a music career performing in a variety of Americana and folk bands — including Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank with his brother Teague. The group recorded five albums, toured the nation and scored a hit in Green Bay Packerland with the song “Old Number Four.” A 2008 move to the Twin Cities saw the formation of Ian Alexy and the Deserters where his songwriting expanded into funk, rock and world music. Now back in Duluth, Alexy is a member of the group Babie Eyes.

The Spine Stealers + Ross Thorn
THE SPINE STEALERS | The Spine Stealers are a two-gal duo, making spooky folk that is heavily influenced by the northwood pines, 24/7 truck stop diners, heartbreak and dark lakes. Music started by learning guitar together around bonfires in their shared hometown of Sun Prairie, WI during the height of the 2020 pandemic. ROSS THORN |With a pastoral upbringing in northern Wisconsin, Ross Thorn’s music emanates as a warm and soulful hymn, waking up optimistically beside a snow covered window. His sharply crafted lyrics – distinctly reminiscent to the likes of Jason Isbell – reveal internal struggles of empathy, questions of human character and virtue, and a search for hope.

Sonja Martin | Sunday Strum Day
Sonja Rebecca Martin is a singer/songwriter from Duluth, MN. She and her husband Lee Martin co-founded the folk group Feeding Leroy and have been writing and singing with the band since 2013. Sonja’s love of folk music has been influenced by, of course, Gillian Welch, as well as Kate Wolf, Sandy Denny, and Linda Ronstadt, among others. She loves to harmonize with other voices and find those close weavings of harmonies that you can feel in your bones.

Yuya Mix is a modern folk singer/songwriter and one man band. His set includes a guitar, ukulele, his suitcase-drum, a tambourine and don’t be shocked if he pulls out a harmonica or kazoo. Many of the inspiration for his originals come from small town life, as well as his Japanese-American upbringing in the Midwest.

Hiahli is a live hip-hop band that plays rock n roll instruments. In addition to the usual fatback rhythms, you may hear some undercurrents of outlaw country, disco, and funk. The group weaves a tapestry of sound taking the listener through grungy, boom bap beats that inspire good times. Duluth bands Baharat and C-SILENCE open up the show.

Big Wave Dave & The Ripples
It’s been a dozen years now since “Big Wave” Dave Adams and his crew began playing steady gigs. The lineup has shuffled over the years, but fully half of the 2023 members were there in 2011. The band’s mix of soul, funk and blues — and the singular mission to get people dancing — has made it a favorite at large festivals, private parties and practically every nightclub stage in the Twin Ports. Adams belts out the vocals, backed by Peter Knutson and Alex Piazza on guitars, Brian Wells on keys, Scott Millis on drums, Alex Nordehn on trombone, Matt Wasmund on baritone sax, and David Rode on trumpet.

Adam Herman | Sun Day Strum Day
Adam Herman has shared the stage with acts like Blues Traveler, Trampled By Turtles, Erik Koskinen, Bill Kirchen, and more. Herman has released two studio albums with his band, Road Beneath the Wheel and St. John’s Dance, a live album, and is set to release the follow up, Brown Bears in early 2021. Born and raised in a small river town in western Illinois, Adam Herman’s songwriting was informed by his roots early on. With a sound that finds itself somewhere in between Jason Isbell’s inward discovery and Chris Stapleton’s soulful delivery, Herman’s songwriting crystallizes aspects of humanity, conveying a keen sense of the gravity in life, while subtly lined with the celebration that is ultimately called for.

Earth Rider Makers Market
The Earth Rider Brewery Fest Field on the first Sunday of each month May through September is the location for a gathering of Twin Ports artisans offering a fine assortment of locally made indie oddities and craft goods. Local craftsmen assemble to sell their unique and handmade goods direct to the public in this family friendly family market. Live music, beer and shopping local is the name of the game.
